When I started working on this project, I asked former Managing Director at Campbeltown Shipyard, Leslie Howarth, what was the key to the success of the boats built at the yard. Well, or course there were many factors which contributed to the popularity of the boats built at Trench Point and one of these was the sea-keeping qualities of the boats. I think that Jim Innes’ photos illustrate this quality perfectly and can confirm what skippers and crew have often told me – that they felt safe at sea in a Campbeltown boat. Some of the Jim’s recent photos are of boats which are decades old but are still going strong – a testament to their design, workmanship and how they are maintained by their skippers.

I was lucky enough to be at the fishing from the late 1970’s to late 1990’s so I’ve seen plenty of the Campbeltown-built boats in action. I am a Fifer, so Argonaut, Arktos, Renown always spring to mind. I don’t really have any old pics as I really just got into photography in the last 3 years, so tend to head to Peterhead when I have any free time.
