SKDT‘s Top Skippers’ Choice exhibition showcasing Campbeltown Shipyard Ltd, which ran from 15-22 February at Campbeltown Town Hall, welcomed an estimated 600 visitors from the town and from further afield. The exhibition, a snapshot of the project’s extensive online archive, was host to visits from Castlehill and Dalintober primary schools whose pupils were guided around by former shipyard employees, Leslie Howarth, Davie Anderson, Bobby Wylie and Adam McClelland.
The children from both schools were able to see the bespoke launch day bunting which they made in workshops with project coordinator, professional artist, Jan Nimmo, during the autumn term last year.

Amongst the children present from Dalintober were the great-grandchildren of Skipper James MacDonald, who commissioned the first boat to be built at Trench Point, launched 50 years ago this month.

Now that there are few signs left of the Shipyard, a key aspect of the project has been to involve a new generation of Campbeltonians in exploring a piece of the town’s history – and for many children their own family history – that could all too quickly be forgotten.
