Douglas McNaught – Naval Architect

It was a pleasure to meet Douglas McNaught, who worked at Campbeltown Shipyard as a naval architect. Douglas has very kindly given us lots of material which we will be scanning for the online archive. We’re also grateful to Douglas’s daughter, Carolyn – she has lots of her own memories of the shipyard, which we will be publishing here on the online archive shortly. Douglas was a key figure at the Campbeltown Shipyard in terms of boat design and was the person who sat down to discuss the specification for each boat with the skippers.

The original 80 foot model  (Yard no. 11) was designed by my predecessor, Stephen Wilson, in conjunction with Willie Campbell, skipper of Yard No 12, George MacGregor, a draughtsman at the yard, under the management of Leslie Howarth. All subsequent models were derivatives of the original model.
